How to become a CAIA charterholder
Complete the applicable CAIA exam path, meet a membership eligibility route, provide two professional references and obtain approved membership. Passing an exam alone does not authorize use of the CAIA designation.

Choose the membership route that matches your record
Separate permission to take exams from eligibility for the charter. CAIA’s published full-membership routes include a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with one year of qualifying professional experience, four years of qualifying experience, or CFA charterholder status in good standing. CAIA must assess your actual circumstances; a job title alone is not a reliable eligibility test.
Describe the work you performed, its dates and its connection to the relevant professional field. Keep evidence you can use if asked to substantiate the application. If a route is unclear, resolve it with CAIA before treating an informal interpretation as approval.
| Example candidate | Route to investigate | What still needs verification |
|---|---|---|
| Degree holder with relevant work | Degree plus one year of qualifying experience | Whether the degree and actual responsibilities qualify |
| Experienced professional without a degree | Four years of qualifying experience | The nature and duration of the experience |
| CFA charterholder in good standing | Published CFA-holder membership route | Current standing and required application evidence |

Complete the applicable exam path
The ordinary route proceeds through Level I and Level II. Eligible CFA charterholders can apply to begin at Level II through CAIA’s verification process. Passing CFA examinations without holding the charter is not the same eligibility status. Confirm the approved route before assuming a level has been waived.
Choose a session and current curriculum edition, then plan the preparation around its response format. Level II includes written work even for candidates entering through the CFA-holder route. The waiver concerns the exam pathway; it does not remove the need to learn unfamiliar alternative-investment applications.
Register with CAIA, then book with Prometric
Create or use your CAIA account to select the level and session and complete payment. Retain the confirmation and CAIA ID. Registration and appointment scheduling are separate steps: after registration is confirmed, use the official Prometric route to choose an available seat within the correct window.
Check the booked date, local time, location and name on the confirmation. A calendar showing an exam window does not guarantee a seat on every day or in every city. Follow the accommodation process before booking if it applies. The blueprint page supplies the current dates and deadlines; Exam Essentials provides the account and booking sequence.
Prepare a complete membership application
After the applicable exam requirements are complete, assemble the eligibility record, two professional references, agreement and dues required for membership. Choose references who know your work and can provide relevant information about it. They do not have to be CAIA members, according to CAIA’s FAQ.
An example preparation file might contain a concise role history, the route you believe applies, evidence of education or professional standing where relevant, and reference contact details. This is an organizational suggestion, not a substitute application form. Submit through CAIA’s current process and respond to any request for clarification.
| Application item | Prepare | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Dates and description of qualifying work or standing | Does the record support the route? |
| References | Two people with relevant knowledge of your experience | Are contact details current? |
| Agreement | Read the applicable membership terms | Can you make the required representations accurately? |
| Dues | Budget and complete the required payment | Has CAIA confirmed completion? |

If you pass Level II before meeting full membership conditions
Do not describe exam completion as the charter itself. CAIA offers affiliate membership for candidates who have passed Level II and are working toward full membership requirements. Affiliate members do not receive the charter or the right to use the CAIA marks.
For example, a recent graduate who completes the exams but lacks the required experience should investigate affiliate membership while building and documenting qualifying work. Keep the status description accurate and ask CAIA how to update the application when the requirement is met. The FAQ currently states that exam results have no time restriction on their validity; check the current membership conditions when applying.
Use and maintain the designation correctly
Use the CAIA designation only after the association confirms the status that permits it, and follow the mark guidelines while maintaining good standing. Membership renewal is an ongoing obligation rather than a one-time consequence of passing the exams. The published membership year runs from June 1 through May 31.
Keep your professional knowledge current and update administrative records when contact or employment details change. A complete plan therefore has three milestones: passing the applicable exams, obtaining the qualifying membership status and maintaining it. The separate exam, membership and study-service payments should remain distinct in your budget.
Common questions
- Do exam results expire before I apply for membership?
- CAIA’s FAQ says there is no time restriction on the validity of exam results. Confirm current membership conditions when you apply.
- Must my references be CAIA members?
- No. The FAQ says references need relevant information about your professional experience.
