CAIA after CFA: Level I waiver and Level II preparation

Eligible CFA charterholders in good standing can apply to enter CAIA at Level II after verification. Passing CFA exams alone is not sufficient. You still need to prepare the current Level II curriculum and its written-response section.

Verify eligibility and use the designated registration route

The CAIA Level I waiver route is for eligible CFA charterholders in good standing, with a digital badge that CAIA can verify. Passing CFA exams or being a CFA candidate does not by itself meet that description. Check your current status and badge before planning around entry directly into Level II.

CAIA’s published process directs applicants through its exam registration page to the One Exam Advantage option for CFA charterholders. Supply the requested badge information for verification and follow the official registration instructions. If your status or badge cannot be verified, resolve that with the relevant association rather than purchasing an ordinary registration and assuming it will be converted.

What the Level I waiver does not remove

You still take Level II and prepare its complete current curriculum, including constructed responses. A familiar portfolio concept may appear in a different investor or implementation setting. Required Emerging Topics also need current-year study rather than substitution with older CFA notes.

Membership is a separate milestone after the applicable exam route. The published CFA-holder membership route still involves the application, references, agreement and dues. Do not describe the Level I waiver as an automatic CAIA charter or an exemption from every requirement.

Identify the learning that would add to your present skills

Start with two real work tasks. If they involve commitment pacing, manager due diligence, private-asset implementation or institutional constraints, inspect the corresponding Level II outcomes. The decision is whether the additional specialization helps you perform those tasks, not whether collecting another designation is inherently valuable.

For example, a public-markets analyst may already understand discounting and portfolio risk but lack experience with capital-call obligations, fund terms and valuation governance. A CAIA study plan can emphasize those gaps while retaining retrieval practice for familiar quantitative methods. Do not assume every CFA charterholder has the same starting strengths.

Try an allocator decision before choosing the specialization

An investor is considering a private-fund interest at a discount to reported NAV. The seller highlights the discount, but the investor also assumes unfunded commitments and uncertain distributions. This is a useful example of where familiar valuation arithmetic must be connected to implementation and liquidity.

Try it before reading the answer

An interest has $24m reported NAV and a price at a 20% discount. It also carries $6m of unfunded commitments. What does the price calculation establish, and what remains to analyze?

Show worked answer

Price before costs is $24m × 0.80 = $19.2m. The discount establishes a price relative to reported NAV, not a bargain or expected return. Analyze NAV quality, future calls, distribution timing, transfer terms and the investor’s funding capacity. The $6m commitment is a possible future obligation, not an automatic immediate addition to the quoted purchase price.

Build a Level II plan from the diagnostic

Begin with the current companion and test prerequisite methods. Keep the methods you can apply in brief review and allocate larger blocks to unfamiliar alternative structures and investor applications. Add written work from the start so you learn to produce a conclusion and case-specific support without answer choices.

Use a weekly cycle of learning, a short case, feedback and changed-case retesting. For required readings, record the central mechanism and limitation before drafting an application. The prerequisite diagnostic and passing guide provide concrete tasks, while the calendar helps place them into available time.

Budget the remaining route separately from study products

New entrants using the CFA-holder route pay the one-time enrollment fee and the applicable Level II registration charge. At the checked rates, that is US$1,395 with early registration or US$1,795 at the standard rate, before other applicable costs. The digital curriculum is included; optional preparation purchases and later membership are separate.

Skipping Level I can remove an exam requirement, but it does not establish how many study hours you personally need for Level II. Use the scope and diagnostic to plan the work. Before paying, confirm the route, session, current charges and available appointment process with CAIA.

Common questions

Can every CFA candidate skip CAIA Level I?
No. The published route is for eligible CFA charterholders in good standing, with verification and the required registration process.
Which charter pays more?
No salary comparison is established here. Role, market, experience and selection effects make unsourced salary claims misleading.
