CMA case-based questions and essays: how to solve a scenario
Read a CMA scenario by starting with the requested output, selecting the relevant exhibit facts, calculating with labeled units, and checking the conclusion. CBQs use structured responses; essays require written responses. Most English exams use CBQs from September/October 2026, with regional essay exceptions.
1. Read the task
What output is required?
2. Apply the method
Select facts, units and assumptions.
3. Explain the result
Connect the answer to the request.
4. Retest the repair
Use fresh inputs without notes.
| Stage | CBQ task | Essay task |
|---|---|---|
| Read the request | Identify the required selection, match or number. | Identify the command: calculate, explain or recommend. |
| Use the exhibit | Choose only the facts needed for that item. | State assumptions and relevant facts in the working. |
| Produce the output | Enter the requested unit or choose the supported response. | Give the answer and concise supporting reasoning. |
| Check | Verify units, sign and all required response fields. | Answer every requested subpart without unrelated prose. |
One case, a calculation and a judgment
Original teaching scenario: a company expects to sell 8,000 units. Beginning inventory is 900 units and desired ending inventory is 1,200. Each unit requires 2 labor hours at $24 per hour. Ignore work in progress.
| Task | Working | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Budget production | 8,000 + 1,200 - 900 | 8,300 units |
| Budget direct labor hours | 8,300 × 2 | 16,600 hours |
| Budget direct labor cost | 16,600 × $24 | $398,400 |
| Explain why sales are insufficient | Ending inventory needs exceed beginning inventory by 300 units. | Production must exceed sales by 300 units. |
Original worked example
A manager budgets labor from sales alone: 8,000 × 2 × $24. What is missing?
The additional 300 units needed for inventory, costing 300 × 2 × $24 = $14,400 in labor.
A numeric CBQ may request the dollar shortfall; an essay may request both the calculation and explanation. The reasoning is the same even though the output differs.
Practise the output your sitting requires
The handbook gives three hours for MCQs and one hour for two scenario sets. At least 50% in MCQs is needed for access; leaving MCQs is final. For 2027, confirm the exact language and location; Japanese-language exams introduce CBQs from January.
| Practice material | Useful for | Does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone MCQ PDF | Concept retrieval and calculation practice | CBQ interface or essay-response fluency |
| Structured case task | Selecting facts and entering required outputs | An official scoring prediction |
| Written explanation | Concise reasoning for essay sittings | That every region still uses essays |
Four errors to catch before checking an answer
Re-read the requested unit; return to the original exhibit for each task; distinguish relevant facts from background; and explain why the result answers the question. If later tasks are independently specified, do not propagate an earlier wrong number automatically.
Read a case in three passes
First identify the business decision and the outputs requested. This gives the facts a purpose: are you budgeting production, comparing alternatives or explaining a control weakness? Then read the exhibit for the dates, units and assumptions attached to those outputs. Finally, revisit only the facts needed for the current task.
Create a short working line for each required output. Label quantities separately from rates, keep months or years visible and distinguish an assumption supplied by the case from one you are adding. If a later task gives its own input, use that input rather than carrying an earlier result forward automatically.
For written responses, put the conclusion next to the supporting calculation or fact. Long descriptions of the whole chapter can obscure an otherwise correct answer. For structured responses, the reasoning belongs in your preparation even when the official control only asks you to select or enter the result.
Review the reasoning as well as the final number
After completing the worked scenario, use this editorial review grid. It is a learning checklist, not IMA’s marking rubric or a promised allocation of exam credit.
| Check | Evidence in the budgeting example | Repair if missing |
|---|---|---|
| Relevant facts | Sales, opening stock and desired closing stock are identified. | Rebuild the inventory flow before doing arithmetic. |
| Correct model | Production = sales + ending inventory - beginning inventory. | Explain why each stock term has its sign. |
| Units | Units become labor hours before the wage rate is applied. | Write the unit beside each intermediate result. |
| Complete response | The labor shortfall and its inventory cause are both addressed. | Match the answer to every verb in the request. |
Original worked example
Change only desired ending inventory from 1,200 to 1,500 in the earlier case. What happens to production and labor cost?
Production rises from 8,300 to 8,600 units. Labor cost rises by 300 × 2 × $24 = $14,400, to $412,800.
Changing one assumption tests whether you understand the model rather than remember the original answer. Next change the wage rate instead and check that the production requirement does not change.
Common questions
- Are CMA essays gone everywhere?
- For 2027, most English-language CMA sittings use case-based questions. IMA Japan announces CBQs for Japanese-language exams from January 2027. Mainland China, Taiwan and English-language Japan require a separate check of the current local registration and appointment format.
- Do the free PDFs contain CBQs or essays?
- No. The linked part PDFs contain selected MCQs with explanations. The worked scenario on this page is separate teaching material.
- Is the example an official exam question?
- No. It is an independently authored teaching example, not recalled or confidential exam content.
