HOCK vs Gleim EA prep: access, fit and total cost

HOCK EA offers monthly access; Gleim Premium sells an upfront course with conditional access until passing. Test both demos, then compare total charges for the same study period. HOCK can suit a shorter commitment; Gleim Premium may suit a longer period if its access terms and teaching fit you.

IRS Enrolled Agent preparation purchase decision, not a ranking of every EA provider. Compare these two offers on the same basis

The comparison below uses HOCK EA membership and the full Gleim Premium EA course. It does not substitute Gleim’s cheaper practice-only option for a course with instruction. Inspect the exact package and the coverage of all the parts you intend to prepare.

At the check, HOCK displayed $119.99/month as its reference price and $59.99/month as a promotion ending November 10. Gleim Premium listed $799. These are dated offers, not guaranteed future prices. Treat a promotion’s eligibility, recurring rate and cancellation conditions as questions to confirm at checkout.

Worked budget: what happens if preparation takes longer?

Illustrative assumption: pay for consecutive whole months at a constant HOCK rate, or buy Gleim Premium once for $799 and remain eligible for its access guarantee. This is a purchasing scenario, not an estimate of how long anyone needs to pass. Exclude exam fees, discounts other than the stated scenario, tax, shipping and supplements on both sides.

Formula: membership cost = monthly rate × number of paid months. At the $119.99 reference rate, three months cost $119.99 × 3 = $359.97. Nine months cost $119.99 × 9 = $1,079.91. Relative to the assumed $799 course, that is $439.03 less over three months and $280.91 more over nine months. The direction changes because one purchase recurs.

For a second, explicitly conditional scenario, suppose the $59.99 promotional rate applies to every paid month. Three months then cost $179.97 and nine months cost $539.91. This column illustrates the effect of the rate; it does not promise promotion eligibility, a future renewal price or availability after November 10.

Find the cost crossover without calling it a study target

At the reference rate, solve $119.99 × months = $799. The quotient is about 6.66 months. Because this example purchases whole monthly periods, the membership first exceeds $799 at seven payments: 6 × $119.99 = $719.94, while 7 × $119.99 = $839.93. Seven payments exceed the course price by $40.93.

Under the conditional $59.99 rate, $799 ÷ $59.99 is about 13.32 months. Thirteen payments total $779.87; fourteen total $839.86. The first whole-month crossover is therefore fourteen payments. A changed renewal price would change that result.

These thresholds compare assumed charges only. They are not pass-time forecasts, recommendations to rush, or evidence that the courses are equally effective. If access pauses, a guarantee does not apply, or you need additional resources, rebuild the calculation using the actual terms instead of stretching this table.

Use the same small task in each demo

First name the obstacle: missing instruction, difficulty applying a rule, an inconsistent routine, or uncertainty about an explanation. Buying a larger bank does not by itself diagnose that obstacle. HOCK offers previews of the first units of all three EA parts; Gleim links a course demo. Use those opportunities before committing.

For an original trial routine, choose one unfamiliar individual-tax concept available in each demo. Read or watch the explanation, write the rule in your own words, then apply it to a different fact pattern. This is an editorial checklist, not a validated assessment or a promise of score improvement. A familiar question answered from memory is a weak test of a new explanation.

  1. 1

    Check the teaching

Can you explain why the rule applies and identify an exception without copying the lesson? Record a concrete missing step rather than a general impression.

  2. 2

    Check the workflow

Can you locate the explanation again, revisit an error and fit the resource into your actual calendar? If live sessions matter, verify their time zone and replay arrangements.

  3. 3

    Check the support

Identify one genuine unresolved concept and inspect how support works. Do not assume a counselor, live session and content-question service are interchangeable.

Make a conditional choice and keep the purchase record

HOCK is worth evaluating when you want to try a recurring commitment and its instruction or live-session format fits your routine. Gleim Premium is worth evaluating when its demo works for you and you prefer an upfront purchase with the stated continuing-access conditions. These are fit judgments, not a universal winner or verified comparative pass-rate claim.

Before paying, save the package name, final price, renewal conditions, cancellation or refund rules, and update coverage. For Gleim, continued access and a refund are separate promises: its published refund terms impose additional conditions and a request deadline. For HOCK, confirm whether the displayed promotional rate applies to your account and future charges. Do not infer a refund merely from the ability to cancel.

If you already own usable preparation materials, identify the precise gap before buying a second full course. Try the changed-fact question below to check the budget method, then use actual provider demos to evaluate teaching. No anecdotal recommendation can replace either step.
