From CFA Level III - Private Wealth: Private Wealth Pathway. This question and its case, when present, are included in the downloadable PDF.
Tomas Cheng, CFA, is conducting a risk-committee briefing on the comprehensive balance sheet and wealth preservation plan of Marcus Vance. Vance, age 38, is a chief training captain at Carrow Airlines. He is married with two dependent children and serves as the sole earner for his household.
Cheng evaluates Vance's holistic financial position to address multi-year spending objectives, employment-related hazards, and foreign currency liabilities. Vance’s compensation exhibits high cyclicality tied to airline profitability. Furthermore, maintaining his commercial captain rating requires passing semi-annual flight medical examinations; failing an exam causes immediate grounding and permanent loss of flight-pay premiums.
Vance's primary planning objectives are to maintain family purchasing power against inflation shocks, fund a fixed euro-denominated simulator lease liability in one year, and eliminate catastrophic threats to his family's economic net worth. Cheng prepares financial data in Exhibit 1, noting expected inflation was projected at 2.5%, but realized annual inflation over the past year surged unexpectedly to 5.5%.
To maintain real purchasing power against inflation, the nominal expenditure requirement must be indexed to realized inflation: $120,000 × (1 + 0.055) = $126,600. Indexing to the original expected inflation rate of 2.5% fails to protect against the unexpected inflation shock.
Use the Private Wealth cases to connect a recommendation with the client’s circumstances. Separate the investor’s objective from the constraints that limit a suitable recommendation.
For each choice, identify the supporting client fact. Check whether you assumed facts about risk capacity, liquidity or goals that the vignette did not supply. Rewrite the reasoning around the stated situation.
Add written justifications and the rest of the current pathway curriculum. This sample provides MCQ feedback, not a score for your written reasoning or a complete assessment of wealth-planning knowledge.
Keep a simple record: question number, the rule or case fact you missed, and the fresh exercise you will use to check the correction. Since the explained sample above is already visible, mark it as reviewed if you saw its answer before attempting the file.
