CFA Level 3 constructed-response command-word drill
A constructed response should directly answer its command word. Identify names the requested item; calculate provides the requested quantity with units; justify connects a decision to case evidence; explain shows the cause and consequence.
The key ideas, at a glance
Identify
Read the visual, then follow the worked example below. Use the stated case assumptions.
Illustrative worked case
Which fund can meet the payment next month?
Fund A: daily withdrawals
Choose A because its liquidity meets the dated need
Fund B: one-year lockup
The lockup cannot fund this next-month payment
The 100,000 need is due next month. The diagram models an original teaching response, not an official marking key.
| Concept | Rule or decision | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Identify | Name the requested factor or decision directly. | Extra unrelated statements can introduce contradictions. |
| Calculate | Show the relevant inputs and result in the requested units. | An unlabeled number can be ambiguous even when the arithmetic is right. |
| Justify | State the choice and connect it to a specific case fact. | “It is better” provides no supporting reason. |
| Explain | State what changes, why it changes, and the implication for the case. | Restating the question does not explain the mechanism. |
01Identify
Name the requested factor or decision directly.
Watch for: Extra unrelated statements can introduce contradictions.
02Calculate
Show the relevant inputs and result in the requested units.
Watch for: An unlabeled number can be ambiguous even when the arithmetic is right.
03Justify
State the choice and connect it to a specific case fact.
Watch for: “It is better” provides no supporting reason.
04Explain
State what changes, why it changes, and the implication for the case.
Watch for: Restating the question does not explain the mechanism.

Put the method to work
One worked example, from facts to answer
Given
A client needs 100,000 for a purchase next month. Fund A permits daily withdrawals; Fund B has a one-year lockup. The prompt asks you to justify choosing A for this cash need.
Method
A concise response ties the recommendation to timing: choose A because its daily liquidity can meet the cash need next month.
Answer and interpretation
The answer supplies both the decision and the relevant case reason. This is an original teaching response, not an official marking key.
Original independent teaching example. Assumptions are stated above; this is not an official exam question or scoring key.
Apply the framework, step by step
Practice the answer shape required by identify, calculate, justify and explain using one original case. Use the constructed-response guide for the wider writing process and exam-format context.
Before you start: Reading the requested number of responses, identifying case evidence and keeping calculation units clear.
METHOD 01
Identify
Name the requested factor or decision directly.
For identify, state the requested item directly. If the prompt asks for one constraint, provide the relevant constraint instead of a list of everything the client might face. Select the case fact that distinguishes your answer. Unrequested additions can introduce contradictions and make it harder to see that you answered the actual prompt.
Avoid this mistake: Extra unrelated statements can introduce contradictions.
METHOD 02
Calculate
Show the relevant inputs and result in the requested units.
For calculate, identify the appropriate relation, substitute the case inputs and label the result. Show enough working to make the method intelligible without burying the requested quantity. Preserve the date, currency, percentage or per-share unit. A correct number with an unclear unit or wrong valuation date can still fail to answer the requested task.
Avoid this mistake: An unlabeled number can be ambiguous even when the arithmetic is right.
METHOD 03
Justify
State the choice and connect it to a specific case fact.
For justify, state the recommendation and support it with a fact that explains why it fits the case. A useful teaching pattern is decision + relevant evidence + implication. The support should discriminate between the available choices. A generic claim that an investment has good returns does not explain why it meets a specified near-term cash need.
Avoid this mistake: “It is better” provides no supporting reason.
METHOD 04
Explain
State what changes, why it changes, and the implication for the case.
For explain, connect a cause to its consequence in the case. Avoid repeating the decision or copying the prompt as the entire explanation. Check that the direction of the effect is clear, especially in duration, currency or allocation questions. These answer patterns are editorial practice aids; the official exam’s instructions and command-word definitions control the requested task.
Avoid this mistake: Restating the question does not explain the mechanism.
Apply it to a different case
- New facts
- The same client needs 100,000 next month from a 500,000 portfolio. The prompt separately asks you to identify the liquidity need, calculate its portfolio share, and justify using a daily-liquid fund.
- Working
- Identify: 100,000 needed next month. Calculate: 100,000 / 500,000 = 20%. Justify: daily liquidity can meet the dated withdrawal.
- Conclusion
- Each command receives the output it asks for: a named need, a labeled percentage, or a supported decision. These are independent teaching responses, not official scoring rubrics.
Original teaching case under the stated assumptions, rather than an official exam question.
Questions about this method
- Does constructed response require a long essay?
- No. Aim for a direct, complete answer to the requested command and number of responses. Length alone does not establish quality; relevant case evidence and correct calculations matter.
- How does justify differ from identify?
- Identify names the requested item. Justify supports a decision with relevant evidence and a reason it fits the case. A bare label is usually insufficient for a justification.
- Are these model answers official CFA grading keys?
- No. They are original teaching patterns for self-review. They do not predict an official score or replace the exam’s command-word instructions.
